Tapir Valley is an incredible place for those who want to experience the real Costa Rican jungle. With over 460 species of birds, 38 species of amphibians, 25 species of mammal, and 56 species of reptile, there's wildlife for any type of interest. Tapir Valley is a 200-acre nature preserve that lies below Volcan Tenorio on the Caribbean slope, and many important Costa Rican species are found here.
Over the last fifteen years, Tapir Valley has been the focus of a major conservation project to restore habitat for the endangered Baird's Tapir and Tapir Valley is one of the easiest, most consistent places to see these amazing mammals.
The best time for a chance to see a tapir is during our night tours, as the tapirs will leave the forest at dusk to forage for plants in the open.
Tapir Valley is one of the best places in Costa Rica to see the remarkable Snowcap hummingbird, and we have many nesting pairs of this tiny bird here.
The Tody Motmot is another difficult species to see here, and you can often hear them calling in the primary forest.
For frog lovers, the newly-discovered Tapir Valley Tree Frog (Tlalocohyla celeste) is another must-see. First reported in 2022, the lagoon at Tapir Valley is the only place in the world to see this species.
