This special little bird is found in lowland tropical forests and humid foothills, often seen in dense understory near streams or forest edges. It's found throughout the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica, especially in protected areas like La Selva and Tortuguero. It's also found on the Pacific side of the country in the Osa Peninsula and as far north as Carara National Park.
If you're lucky, you might get to see their amazing courtship dance when the males perform a rapid, energetic “moonwalk” display on bare branches to attract females.
These small birds feed mostly on small fruits, playing an important role in seed dispersal throughout the forest.
